RAFA: KEANE A GREAT PARTNER FOR TORRES

The Anfield boss sees the pair as a lethal combination of guile and pace capable of firing the Reds to glory in 2008-09. Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv after the 28-year-old signed last night, Benitez said: "We were looking for a player with game intelligence and good movement who could play alongside Torres. "He can play with Torres up front and also on the right. "We knew he was a Liverpool fan since forever. We knew that he was a very good signing in terms of the commitment, the quality and the intelligence of the player. "He is a player who can give to us a lot of goals – normally he gets about 15 each year. We were looking for the workrate he can give to us, the game intelligence and also the goals." Keane scored an impressive 107 goals in 253 appearances for former club Tottenham – but the penalty box isn't the only place Benitez believes he'll have an impact. The Reds manager thinks his new boy will have a positive effect on team morale. "He has experience in the Premier League and also all the reports of his personality and professionalism are fantastic. He can be a good example for the young players," said Benitez. "I feel like he has enough experience in the game and that he has a very good mentality. He is very hungry, so everything is positive." After being unveiled to the press this morning, Keane could travel with his new teammates to Villarreal. Whenever he does make his debut, it is likely to be in the number seven shirt. Benitez added: "Yes, we were talking about the number, and the big names that have had this number, so it will be inspirational for him to have it too." One of the first questions fans will be asking when Keane does finally make his bow is whether they'll see his famous cartwheel goal celebration. The man himself says it would be rude not to bring it out once for the Kop, though Benitez has told supporters not to expect spectacular celebrations week in, week out. He said: "We will talk. It is important to score and also to celebrate afterwards, but he has to be careful just in case!"

ANFIELD MEDICAL FOR £20M KEANE..

ROBBIE KEANE will undergo a medical at Liverpool today to seal his £20million move from Tottenham.
Striker Keane could then go straight into Rafa Benitez’s squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Villarreal in Spain. Liverpool thrashed out the last details on the move over the weekend and Keane, 28, will sign a five-year contract understood to be worth about £90,000 a week. Keane, who opted to move to Wolves rather than Anfield as a teenager when leaving Dublin side Crumlin United, is set to be handed Liverpool’s famous No7 shirt which was worn sparingly by Harry Kewell last term. Meanwhile, new signing Philipp Degen’s Liverpool career could be interrupted inside a month by the need for a groin operation for the full-back...

Liverpool F.C.... begin...

Liverpool Football Club is a professional football club based in Liverpool, England. Liverpool play in the Premier League, and are the most successful club in the history of English football, having won more trophies than any other English club. They have won a record 18 English League titles, although the last time they won the title was in 1990. Liverpool have won five European Cups, an English record. Only A.C. Milan and Real Madrid have won Europe's premier club competition more times, although only one win has come in the UEFA Champions League era. They have won the FA Cup and League Cup seven times. They are also one of only five teams to have been awarded the prestigious UEFA Badge of Honour, which was awarded to the club in 2005 after their fifth UEFA Champions League victory.
Liverpool have played at Anfield since they were founded in 1892. However, plans have been formed to start work on a new 70,000 all reserved seat stadium, in the summer of 2010 near Stanley Park. The new stadium will be funded by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who became the club's owners on February 6, 2007.
Liverpool have a large and diverse fanbase, who hold a string of long-standing rivalries with several other clubs; the most notable of these is with neighbours Everton, with whom they regularly contest the Merseyside derby. Liverpool also have a fierce rivalry with Manchester United, due to the success of both clubs, as well as their proximity to each other.
The club's fans have been involved in two major disasters. At the Heysel Stadium disaster, 39 Juventus F.C. fans died when a wall collapsed after crowd trouble in the 1985 European Cup Final, and the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989 where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

LUCAS TARGETS DOUBLE GLORY

The Brazilian midfielder, who started 12 league matches in his first campaign with the Reds, admits competition for places in the centre of Liverpool's midfield is more intense than ever, but hopes he can go on and make more of an impact in his second year with the club. "Of course it's going to be difficult but I will be trying my best (to get regular starts)," said Lucas. "We had a good second half of the season but we didn't win the title. Hopefully this year we can win the title and this is our challenge now. "I think that winning the league is most important because it's been an 18 year wait since we last won it. "The focus is to win something but the most important thing now is the Premier League." While Liverpool begin to step up their preparations ahead of the big kick off at Sunderland on August 16, Lucas will now turn his attention to Brazil's bid for Olympic glory. He admits it is frustrating to miss the Reds' opening matches of the season but insists representing his country was an opportunity he could not turn down. "Of course Liverpool would have wanted me playing in Liverpool because I will miss some games - some important games - but they know that this (the Olympics) is important for me and for the country. "Hopefully, we will win this title and then I can return to Liverpool and think about the Premier League, the Champions League and the other cups." Brazil head to Beijing as the favourites to claim the Gold medal and while Lucas would love to secure that honour with his country, he is keen to remain cautious and take each game at a time. "It's good to be favourites but now we just have to think about taking it game by game," he said. "It's difficult but now we have to focus on our two friendlies against Singapore and Vietnam and then think about the Olympics. "It's normal for Brazil to be thought of as favourites so we just have to take it game by game and try to do our best.

ABLETT: PACHECO CAN SHINE UNDER RAFA

The 17-year-old Spanish striker arrived from Barcelona last season and enjoyed a superb debut year as he helped the reserves to a unique treble under the command of Ablett. The reserve team boss, who watched on television as Pacheco set up a goal for Lucas against Lucerne last week, admitted he has been impressed with the way he has handled the step up to first-team level during pre-season. Ablett believes he is a player with a bright future. "Dani is a young lad with a lot of potential," Ablett told Liverpoolfc.tv. "Last season was his first here with us and he more than played his part in what was an exceptional campaign. "I have always said our main goal is to get players through to Rafa's first-team squad and it is pleasing to see Daniel doing well in the games he has played in pre-season. "People have to remember, though, that he is only 17 and not to expect too much too soon, but there is no better man than Rafa to help him to achieve what he wants in the game."
